LASIK or laser in situ keratomileusis is a laser vision correction technique. It reshapes the cornea and corrects a wide range of visual issues, eliminating the need for glasses or contacts. The visual issues that may be corrected include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. If you are suffering from any of these issues, here are some answers to questions patients frequently ask. They may help you determine whether to get the procedure.
The main aim of LASIK is to change the shape of the cornea. The change helps the cornea focus on images better so you can see clearly. The procedure uses two lasers that work together to create a flap and reshape your cornea. The reshaping will depend on the vision correction you need. The doctor will lay back the flap in place, and the eye heals naturally.
Whether you are a candidate for LASIK or not depends on the outcome of a thorough preoperative evaluation. The doctor will check each eye on its own as they are both unique. Some of the basic requirements of a LASIK candidate include:
Over 18 years old
Healthy cornea
No autoimmune or active eye disease
A stable prescription for at least two years
LASIK has FDA approval, so it is safe and effective. However, this does not automatically make it the right choice for everybody. Certain conditions preclude you from being an appropriate candidate; if you have any of them and insist on going through the procedure, you may end up with non-optimal results. Before going for LASIK, make sure you get an evaluation.
The actual procedure takes about 10 minutes for each eye. Plan to be in the doctor’s office for about an hour and a half. The total time depends on your prescription and the amount of work the doctor needs to do.
It varies with the patient and the amount of work the doctor needs to do. Many patients go back to their daily activities after one or two days. In these cases, they may return to driving within this period. However, it may take one or two months for your vision to stabilize. It may be hazy and fluctuate slightly, but that is normal.
After the surgery, you will continue to visit your doctor. These visits monitor your progress and ensure that the procedure produces the desired results. The appointments are scheduled one day, one week, one month, three months, and six months after the surgery. However, the doctor may schedule more frequent appointments if needed. If you feel you have any complications, do not hesitate to contact your doctor.
LASIK is very accurate but, advanced technology and experience cannot guarantee perfect 20/20 vision. Consider your postoperative evaluation and your own needs. However, many patients can go about their daily activities without needing glasses or contacts.
The procedure is permanent, especially if your evaluation shows a stable prescription for at least two years before surgery.
