Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery Technology

CATALYS® Femtosecond Laser

What Is Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery?

Laser-assisted cataract surgery is a bladeless, computer-guided approach to removing a clouded natural lens (a cataract) and replacing it with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Unlike traditional cataract surgery, which relies entirely on handheld instruments, laser-assisted surgery uses a femtosecond laser to perform several of the most critical steps of the procedure with a level of accuracy that the human hand simply cannot match.

At Eastside Eye Physicians, we use the CATALYS® Precision Laser System from Johnson and Johnson Vision, widely recognized as the world’s most sophisticated laser cataract surgery platform. This technology allows our surgeons to deliver a highly customized, gentle, and repeatable treatment tailored to the unique anatomy of each patient’s eye.

How Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery Works

The CATALYS® system works by combining advanced 3D imaging with the precision of a femtosecond laser to automate the most technically demanding steps of cataract removal. Here is what the process looks like:

  • 3D Mapping and Treatment Planning: Before any laser energy is applied, CATALYS® captures detailed, real-time 3D images of your eye. Because every eye is shaped differently, this imaging allows our surgeons to build a fully customized treatment plan based on the precise dimensions and structures of your individual eye.
  • Laser Incision and Lens Fragmentation: Using that map, the laser creates a perfectly sized, shaped, and centered circular opening in the lens capsule. Clinical studies have shown that this opening is approximately 10 times more accurate when performed with CATALYS® compared to a manual technique and traditional surgery. The laser then softens and breaks apart the cloudy natural lens into smaller pieces, reducing the amount of energy needed to remove it.
  • Corneal Reshaping (When Applicable): For patients who want to reduce their dependence on glasses after surgery, the CATALYS® laser can also make precise incisions to reshape the cornea and address astigmatism. These incisions can be combined with the latest generation of premium intraocular lenses for even greater visual freedom.
  • IOL Placement: Once the cataract is removed, a clear artificial lens is implanted in its place. Because the laser-created capsulotomy is so precise, the IOL can be placed exactly where intended, reducing the risk of post-operative complications.

Benefits of Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery

Patients who choose laser-assisted cataract surgery at Eastside Eye Physicians benefit from several meaningful advantages over conventional manual techniques, including the following:

  • Greater precision: The CATALYS® laser performs key surgical steps with accuracy that exceeds what is achievable by hand, reducing variability and improving final outcomes.
  • Customized treatment: 3D imaging ensures every aspect of the laser treatment is tailored to your eye’s unique size and shape.
  • Gentler procedure: A laser breaking up the clouded lens reduces the ultrasound energy needed during surgery, which can mean less trauma to surrounding tissue.
  • Reduced dependence on glasses: Precise laser incisions combined with premium lens implants can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eyewear after surgery.
  • Bladeless approach: The laser replaces handheld blades for several key steps, offering a bladeless option that many patients find reassuring.
  • Consistent, repeatable results: Computer-guided laser technology performs the same steps with consistent accuracy from patient to patient.

CATALYS® Precision Laser System From J&J Vision

Many of the steps of cataract surgery that are traditionally performed using handheld instruments can now be completed using the precision of a laser. The CATALYS® Precision Laser System is the world’s most sophisticated laser cataract surgery system, providing a highly customized, more accurate and gentle treatment for cataracts.

Who Is a Candidate for Laser Cataract Surgery?

Most adults diagnosed with a significant cataract are potential candidates for laser-assisted cataract surgery. You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with a cataract that is affecting your daily activities, driving, or quality of life
  • Want to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses after surgery
  • Have astigmatism that could be corrected with laser corneal incisions
  • Are in generally good ocular health with no conditions that would complicate surgery

Certain eye conditions, such as advanced glaucoma, severe corneal disease, or significant retinal disorders, may affect your candidacy. The only way to know for certain whether laser cataract surgery is right for you is through a comprehensive medical eye exam performed by one of our doctors. A medical eye exam goes beyond a standard vision screening and evaluates the health of every structure in your eye, giving us the clinical information we need to recommend the safest and most effective treatment plan for your situation.

Your Cataract Surgery Consultation and Screening

Before any surgical recommendation is made, patients at Eastside Eye Physicians undergo a thorough cataract surgery consultation that includes a complete medical eye exam. This is a critical step that should not be confused with a routine vision check or a basic glasses prescription appointment.

During your medical eye exam and surgical screening, our doctors will:

  • Measure visual acuity and assess how significantly the cataract is affecting your vision
  • Evaluate the density and location of the cataract using slit-lamp examination
  • Perform corneal topography and biometry measurements to calculate the correct IOL power for your eye
  • Assess the health of the retina, optic nerve, and macula to rule out other conditions that could affect surgical outcomes
  • Review your full ocular and medical history, including any medications that may impact surgery
  • Discuss your lifestyle and vision goals so we can recommend the lens technology and surgical approach that aligns with your needs

This detailed medical eye exam is what allows us to personalize your cataract surgery from the very beginning. We also take time at this appointment to answer all of your questions and make sure you feel confident and informed before any decisions are made.

Light Adjustable Lens Technology After Cataract Surgery

Eastside Eye Physicians is proud to be one of the first providers of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) from RXSight® in Michigan. This revolutionary implant technology offers something no other IOL can: the ability to fine-tune and optimize your vision after cataract surgery is complete.

Traditional intraocular lenses are fixed at the time of implantation. The Light Adjustable Lens, by contrast, is made from a special photosensitive material that can be reshaped using a precise ultraviolet light treatment delivered in our office. This means that if your vision is not quite where you want it to be after surgery, your prescription can be adjusted and locked in without any additional surgical procedures.

Here is how the Light Adjustable Lens process works:

  • Cataract surgery is performed, and the Light Adjustable Lens is implanted in your eye
  • You wear special UV-protective eyewear during the post-operative adjustment period to protect the lens from unintended light exposure
  • Beginning approximately 2 to 4 weeks after your eye surgery is completed, your doctor uses a specialized UV light device to reshape the lens and dial in your optimal prescription
  • Once your vision is exactly where you want it, the lens is locked in permanently with a final light treatment

For patients who want the highest possible level of personalization and the best chance of achieving freedom from glasses, the Light Adjustable Lens represents one of the most exciting advancements in cataract care available today.

What to Expect After Cataract Surgery and Ongoing Eye Care

Recovery from laser-assisted cataract surgery is typically straightforward. Most patients notice improved vision within the first 24 to 48 hours, with continued refinement over the following weeks as the eye heals and adjusts to the new lens.

Immediately After Surgery

You may experience mild blurring, light sensitivity, or a scratchy sensation in the eye for the first day or two. These symptoms are normal and generally resolve quickly. Eye drops will be prescribed to prevent infection, reduce inflammation, and support healing.

The First Few Weeks

You will have several follow-up appointments scheduled at our Shelby Township or St. Clair Shores office. These visits allow our doctors to monitor your healing and, for Light Adjustable Lens patients, begin the adjustment process. Avoid rubbing your eyes, swimming, or strenuous activity during this period.

Long-Term Vision and Eye Health

Cataract surgery corrects the clouded lens, but it does not eliminate the need for ongoing eye care. Conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye can develop or progress independent of cataract treatment. Regular medical eye exams remain an essential part of protecting your vision for the long term.

We recommend that all of our post-surgical patients maintain a schedule of annual or biannual medical eye exams so that our doctors can monitor their IOL, assess the health of the retina and optic nerve, and update any glasses or contact lens prescriptions as needed. Consistent medical eye exams are the single most important step you can take to preserve the vision gains achieved through surgery.
